October Horse Ceremony

Postby Publius Iunius Brutus » Sun Oct 16, 2016 3:53 pm

Salvete Omnes!

Yesterday was the October Horse, a festival to Mars. In antiquity a horse was sacrificed to Mars through the use of the sacred spear of Mars. This ceremony has origins in autumn agricultural events and marked one of several purification ceremonies for the military which was ending its campaign season.

A modern version of this ceremony was conducted today by the Roman Republic (http://www.romanrepublic.org). In ancient times the military had an important role to play in spreading Romanitas. Today this role falls upon many scholars and lovers of Rome. This ceremony was conducted on behalf of these individuals, for military personnel and for the greater Restorationist community.

Librium made in accordace with Cato's recipe was offered as well as a iron nail and wine to Mars. Today was the Ides and Cyprus wood was offered to Iupiter as well.

This ceremony was conducted in accordace with the ceremonial formula devised by the Societas Numaea. http://romanrepublic.org/civitas/joint_ ... 20Numaea/5
