New Citizen's Guide (Getting started in the Roman Republic)

STEP I

APPLY

If you have not yet applied for membership or citizenship then do so here: http://romanrepublic.org/roma/register/.

After you submit your application, check your email. You should receive an automated email within 1 hour (usually less) of sending your application. This message will confirm our receipt of your application.

Next, our censors (secretaries) will review your application. Only once your application is approved will you be an official citizen of the Roman Republic and be able to login to our members portal.

You will receive another email upon approval of your application by the censors. This approval process usually takes a few days, but in some circumstances may take 2-3 weeks. If you have not heard back within 3 weeks you should email director@romanrepublic.org.

STEP II

LOG IN AND REVIEW PROFILE

Congratulations citizen! You have now been approved as a citizen-member of the Roman Republic! You should have been notified by an email. In this email will be your citizenship certificate.

The first thing you should do is log in to the RomanRepublic.org

You do this by going here: http://romanrepublic.org/roma/userlogin/. Your username is your email address or the username you selected at the time of applying for citizenship.

After you log in you will automatically be forwarded to your citizen profile.

The first thing you should do is add your skills and biographical information by clicking “edit” on this profile page.

Next, click “Change Profile Photo” and upload your personal photo, ideally an image of yourself. Also, click “Change Cover Image” and upload a cover image that expresses your personality. You will notice that after you have done these things you are automatically awarded denarii.

Next, go back to your profile by clicking “Profile”. Review your Gens, Order, and Province. Also review your citizenship status, century and tribe.

STEP III

CONSIDER PAYING DUES

The Roman Republic is free. We do not require membership dues (tax) to be paid in order to remain a citizen. However, such funds are essential for is to carry out our daily operations. All donations are invested back into our members and our cultural projects as a non-profit. Therefore we are very thankful to those members who make membership due payments.

There are six options for membership dues and they are known as donation classes or tax class. They are numbered from I to VI.

To review your tax class look for this icon on your citizen profile page:

Class VI is free. If you pay no dues you will always remain in this class. Class I, II, III, IV, and V require donations of the various amount. Upon such a donation your tax class is updated for the given calendar year.

Those who donate into higher classes receive recognition and honour. Therefore, they are also granted more say in determining the future of our community.

For more details and to pay dues click the “Pay Here” link under the donation class icon on your profile page, or visit here when logged in.

STEP IV

JOIN COLLEGIA / INTEREST GROUPS

A major part of the online activity that occurs in the Roman Republic is focused upon collegia. A collegium is an association formed within the Roman Republic community to explore and address a particular topic. We strongly recommend joining groups that interest you and participating.

You may review and join collegia here.

All collegia also have discussion fora located here.

There are also private groups (societas) where you may request membership. You may review such groups here.

Many gentes have groups as well which are great for meeting new friends. You may review gentes groups here. If your gens does not have a group you may found one here. (note: you must be a Class IV donor or greater to found a group).

STEP V

VISIT THE MAIN FORUM & CHAT

The primary online meeting place for our international community is online in our main forum and in our chat room. These two places are in some ways the digital equivalent of the physical fora of antiquity.

Take a moment to visit our main forum and introduce yourself here.

To start a new topic see the image below.

To reply to an existing topic, click the topic, then scroll the to bottom of the page. When your message is done click the “submit” button. See picture below.

Any other citizen who is logged in to the Roman Republic when you are can be contacted in our chat room. To do so click the icon indicated below in the picture.

STEP VI

GET ACQUAINTED WITH YOUR PROVINCE (REGIONAL CHAPTER)

The online medium is great for connecting with others from around the world. But ultimately Roman culture is lived and it is lived with others face-to-face. Your local province (regional chapter) is the best starting place for such interaction.

To discover your province visit your citizen profile page indicated in step II of this guide. See which province is listed.

You may also view all provinces here

Every province also has an online group you can join. This is a great way to connect with others in your area. To view all provincial groups go here.

Provinces are led and organized by a governor (regional manager) appointed by the Senate of the Roman Republic. However, there are no rules against any citizen organizing event on their own. In fact, it is encouraged!  So reach out and take a leap!

Alternatively, if you would be interested in leading your province as a governor you may apply here.

STEP VII

READ/WRITE OR EDIT AN ARTICLE IN OUR ROMAN WIKI (BIBLIOTHECA)

To restore and live a culture takes developing knowledge and traditions around the past and the present. Towards this ends, the Roman Republic has created a wiki dedicated to both ancient Rome and modern manifestations of Romanitas. We call it the Bibliotheca Romana – you can visit it here.

When you are logged in you can write articles on any topic that interests you – modern or ancient. To do so, just click the button indicated below.

When writing a new article you may make edits using a word processor like interface (see image below). You may add images, create tables and format text as needed. Please note, new articles must be approved by magistrates prior to being publicly displayed.

You can also edit existing articles. When you visiting an article you wish to edit simply click the “edit” button (see image below). Note that all edits need to be approved by a magistrate prior to being publicly viewable.

STEP VIII

CRAFT YOUR OWN ROMAN BLOG & SEE WHAT OTHER CITIZENS ARE DOING ON OUR SOCIAL NETWORK

The Roman Republic strives to make Romanitas something that is experienced and lived every day. Sharing your everyday experiences, interests, ideas, stories and whatever else the muses inspire is important! To help create a community of sharing such thoughts and experiences every citizen is provided with their own blog.

To access your blog visit your citizen profile (see step II) and click “blog”.

To create a new blog post click “New Post” on the screen the loads.

A word processor like interface will then load allowing you to format text and upload pictures.

The Roman Republic is also an online social network. To see what other citizens are doing, and to read their blog posts you may visit their profile and click the “blog” link. You may also view all recent activity in the Republic by clicking the “home” button while viewing citizen profiles (see image below).

If you do not feel like writing a whole blog post, then why not share what is new today with a simple post on your wall? To do this you may simply click “wall” (see image below).

Alternatively, you can access the citizen profiles of all members by viewing the album civium (member directory) here.

STEP IX

PARTICIPATE, CHECK YOUR EMAIL, HAVE FUN

Steps I to VIII will allow you to take advantage of the core community aspects of the Roman Republic. However, there is much more you can do. You could delve into our reenactment community, or the Cultus Deorum, or into learning Latin, or simply meeting up with others who love Rome. You may find yourself wanting to take on leadership roles in collegia, or in your province or maybe even help the international organization by running in an election to serve as a magistrate. The Roman Republic can be many things depending on your interests!

You can take advantage of all the options by being present in our Roman community. Participating in the events in your province, communicating with your fellow Romans around the world online, and helping develop useful resources, and meaningful friendships.

We encourage you to check emails from the Roman Republic and to view the main forum, and our event calendar regularly.

If at any time you have questions please email us at director@romanrepublic.org.
