I have started to write a collection of prayers to the gods. Here is my latest effort for your review, use and comments. All of my prayers are written in the Latin style in English.
I SING OF MARSĀ
Oh Mars I will sing of Mars,
The ruler who is my protector.
I will sing of Mars, the defender, Victor, marching god.
May he guard the boundaries of my lands, May he sustain my fathers,
and clasp my brothers to his breast.
I will sing of Mars, the defender. If I fall in the battle of life,
May my blood be an offering to Mars on the field of woe.I sing of god Mars,
Who accepts the offering of my life with the pride of a father. And oh Mars,
gazing at the dawn.
And oh Mars,
Guardian of my Land,
Men of my Tribe sing.
And may this weapon,
the weapon of my people and heritage,
Protect this people till the tale be told. For that is our cry,
For that is what we will do.
For that is our cry,
For that is what we shall do,
Protect this land till the tale be told.
Add my chapter to the story of my ancestors.May the might of my tribe,
Protecting the bountiful Roman people,
Be thusly the glory of the Victor on my shoulders,I will sing of Mars,
the defender.
I will sing of Mars,
the protector.Oh Mars I will sing,
The ruler who is my protector.
But if I fall on the field of battle of life.
My spirit will fly southwards to the Greer great Mars.
I sing of Mars,
For the boundaries and the laws of our land.
My brothers and I have made him glad with the smoke of sacrifice.
He has blessed us,
He protects my honor,
My freedom,
My life,
He sends me joy in my labors.Great Mars,
You who are my ultimate source of protection,
I, (YOUR NAME), beseech you to protect my life, my property, my health, my honor, and my family.Guide my steps over the sand,
With my shield over my hand,
My sword at my hip,
My spear in my hand.Mighty Mars accept this offering of (OFFERING) if it is pleasing,
towards this petition made and in thanks of your past great deeds of aid.Make it so upon your benevolence.
March 15, 2021 at 5:16 am #40827FOR JUNO AS WHISPERED BY A CITIZEN OF ROME
Queen of Heaven, Queen of the Gods, Queen of the Mothers,
under whose dominion all things are,
at whose will the earth revolves and the stars move,
whose breath gives life to all things,
who leads the bride to marriage,
who brings forth new citizens,
who gives light to mortals,
whose power, whose divinity, whose majesty you have alone.Your will marks all things.
You have the right to command.
With your nod the walls spring up and the battlements grow strong.Your sacred laws supply war and peace.
You appoint the times of solemn festivals and keep the hours of prayer and sacrifice. You govern the law of progress and orders recurring birth.
Mighty in power, you guide the affairs of the world according to your will
O most gracious Queen of Heaven,
help and protect me.May the earth rest lightly on me, and may I be buried beneath your feet.
May the feet of her whose husband I am be guided by you.
May the head of her whose husband I am be crowned by you.
We gratefully sing your glory, the thought of your work.Magnanimous goddess, immovable to your foe,
you make heirs to your power,
while the heavens display your signs.
I see this and praise you.
Ancient Juno, Lady of the gods, witness of Jupiterās thunder and lightning,
O goddess of perfect beauty and beauty of moderation,I dedicate myself, my heart to you, to your service,
In return, be mild with me.
O beloved, protect my children.
O goddess, preserve the women in my life.
The supplication that I make to you,
by birthright,
You who watch over treaties and the keeping of faith,
For I am your client kindly observing your majesty in this offering of (offering name).
If you will it, accept this sacrifice. If not, avert your face from this prayer.I pray and beseech you, Juno,
first in this prayer,
then in all the others that I make,
In every adverse turn of Fortuneās wheel,
And in every event of my life.March 15, 2021 at 7:38 am #40831To the goddess Minerva

and vie for the sun.

How do you do beautifully dethrone the never-ending enemy of ignorance?Oh, brave Minerva!
How do you dethrone your never-ending barbaric enemies?

stuck between earth and air,

Minerva, I beseech you. Hear me.Oā grey eyed Minerva,
I thank you for all your great blessings.
I thank you for all your gifts to my life.

so the civilized world will go on.

Make your will so with your grace.
My humble petition,
Oh great and noble one, I ask of you if you will it.**The small print:
To the goddess Minerva
A prayer in the style of Ovid and Virgil, meaning it is written in dactylic hexameter, with imperfect rhymes at the end of the hexameters.
I got the idea after I read Ovidās āBucolicsā ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucolics ), in which he uses some much closer rhymes at the end of hexameters than Virgilās āAeneidā ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeneid ).
It may seem hard to write this way, but it is not too bad.March 15, 2021 at 9:01 am #40833AVE!
You should compile these into a book. A real book. They are that good. Brutus has been saying he would do this for six years. I think you should take that as a hint. Honestly, these are better than what Varro has written. Just get it done already!
I am so glad you are doing this. I love these prayers. At times itās like the only other person who seems to actually build the CDR content is Varro and his friends (who are, frankly, often ill committed). Iām sure the followers of the CDR would like to be able to use some of these.
I like the idea, and your writing style reminds me a bit of Virgil ā but it is not hexameter no offence⦠Latin speakers can take offence when you say something is in the style it isnāt! I am just trying to give you positive feedback here.
I think it is a wonderful project. I only have one more suggestion: say more about what each god represents. Then people will have good ideas about which gods they should worship/ which ones best fit their character/ worldview. What kind of behaviour do each god expect? It could be a good basis for forming a solid foundation of devotion. Please continue your work on these!
VALE!
March 15, 2021 at 4:55 pm #40851Florius Lupus Cispio Laeuo salutem dicit.
Do you have these prayers in Latin, too? I donāt like using barbarian languages in the sacra priuata.Ā These prayers above look like translated from Latin.
I think we should stick with Latin in religious ceremonies, even if we donāt understand Latin. Even in ancient Rome people sometimes didnāt understand the prayers and songs, since they were often in an antiquated form of Latin. The Roman Catholic Church also used exclusively Latin in the liturgy before the Second Vatican Council. When it comes to authenticity we should not permit that Catholics are more Roman than us. Apparently in Roman tradition understanding the meaning of the prayer has never been necessary. It was rather a formula that had to be repeated in an exact way.
Vale!
