It was done, I had stepped off the final dosage of medication, and thus, I was now fully healed, both in mind, body and spirit. The contract I had initiated with Apollo Medicus, was thus fulfilled.
I approached my basin and performed the purificatio, before approaching my Lararium. The cold water cleaned my body, but my mind was already prepared and filled with anticipation for the ceremony ahead. You were never certain if the Gods were watching, but I was always excited to speak to them nonetheless, like you would be if you spoke to a treasured friend or colleague. The ceremonial formula already memorized, my body jumped into the motions of the ceremony. First was Vesta and her flame, then Ianus and his first offering, then Vesta again and finally, the guest of honor, Apollo. I bid them all welcome with their offerings and the ceremony could commence..
I addressed my patron, carefully pronouncing every epithet “Apollo, Proupsius, Agraeus, Medicus, Phoebus, Averruncus, Articenens, Coelispex..”, after welcoming them, I made the intentions of the ceremony clear, today, I did not wish for anything in return, but instead I wished only to say Gratias for fulfilling the contract we had made in the beginning of my treatment. I did not witness any opposition from anyone in attendance, so I proceeded.
The main offering was thus presented, and the ceremony half-way to completion. I spent a moment in reflection, pondering upon the qualities of my Patron, Apollo, and all their domains and associations. Gods willing, I could seek to emulate these virtues and wisdom that Apollo themself embodies, as a sign of respect and thankfulness for honoring our agreement.
When we had all had the chance to say our piece, I formally presented all offerings made thus far and released my mortal ownership of them, declaring them as property of the divine, sacer.
When all was said and done, I thanked yet again, and likewise thanked everyone for attending after providing them with a final parting gift, in hopes that any conducted mistake could be forgiven. When everyone had been addressed and thanked, the doors between God and mortal were closed, and the ceremony was complete.
I felt like sharing this story as a way of showcasing some of my own Sacra Privata, and to also say that the Pax Deorum begins in your home, in your own private practice. When the populous pays their dues to the Gods, the community prospers. Never forget your pietas, Roman, and all will be well.
