We must teach the truth to next generation. We must teach them early, what we learned late. We must teach them who they are, and why. We must teach them about the cultus deorum.
But before we can do any of this, we need to know what it is we’re teaching. And if you think you know by now — or if your knowledge comes from a book that missed the point — then this is for you. This is a crash course on the cultus deorum.
Thank you for this reminder that the cultus deorum is ultimately about action. That books alone are only a tools towards showing piety. That we should not be complacent with just reading about traditions, but that we should also strive to incorporate them into our lives.
Nevertheless, it is worth noting that while we may find many books and websites offering a multitude of ways to perform rituals in this day and age, very few of these options are based on ancient sources.
The Roman Republic is setting the example in threading this needle between action and tradition. So keep it up Varro and everyone else!
