As we begin the project of creating a legion of the Roman Republic, our community of historical reenactment made an important decision, namely, it was decided to give everyone to touch the creation and development of this project, to stand at its sources, to prove themselves for the benefit of others and for the common good.

This topic will be the first in a series of topics within which, through discussions, fateful decisions will be made that will determine the prospects for the development of the project, the shape and future of the Legion. It is important to understand that this project is not a private matter of a narrow group of experienced reenactors, but a project that anyone can join who is willing to work selflessly to achieve this goal. Everyone can put the feasible mite into the common cause, and influence the development of the project.

Let's start with the fact that in this topic, it is proposed to discuss one of the most important attributes of any legion - the emblem.

As for the emblem, the Leg. XI Cl. P. F. gives a wide field of possibilities for choice, since its emblem is not known from the beginning, in view of which, there is a wide scope for creativity, discussions and reasoned variations.

The discussion of the emblem begins at this point. Anyone can participate in the discussion, after which a vote will take place, in which only the members of the legion can take part. Thus, it is necessary to understand that only the members of this community can decide the fate of the community.

P.S. Their variant of the emblem Legion's "veterans" will presented later, that would give an opportunity to develop the discussion.

As Philippа has already said, we propose exactly this version of the emblem. You can reasonably ask: "Why?". The thing is, as it was already noted before, we did not get information about exactly what was the legion's emblem, in connection with which, we have a certain scope for creativity. However, it should be noted that all variants of the emblems should be somehow and somehow reinforced. In this case, our rationale for this emblem is as follows:

There is an opinion that the legion at the initial stage of its life was formed from sailors, naval teams. Thus, it seems reasonable that unlike legions, which were formed from "land" recruits,they should somehow express their naval traditions, even turning into infantry. That is why our emblem depicts Neptune, the lord of the seas, holding a trident in his hands, as a symbol of his power, and also holding a fish or a dolphin, which again indicates a connection with the sea.

This emblem is good from all sides, firstly, it displays the history of those soldiers who left the sea and began to serve on the land; secondly, the pagan deity indicates a connection with the СDR and ancient polytheism; thirdly, being generally traditional, this emblem is original , and emphasizes the uniqueness of our legion.

According to the numismatics, Neptune is very likely the emblem of the Legio XI.
(Please note that Neptune is holding a dolphin not a duck or whale).

If I may, I would suggest you to consider the trident as another option for the emblem. You would have all the symbolism you want (origin of the legion, deity and uniqueness) but also a better visibility/perception. Graphically, the trident would be stronger. I mean, it would much more identifiable (on a photo or on the battlefield).
It would be also easier for the reenactors to reproduce on a shield.
