Today is a festival day to Bellona. A temple to Bellona, the war-goddess, was vowed by Appius Claudius Caecus in 296 BCE during a war against Etruscans and Samnites. In front of the temple stood a little pillar (columella) over which a fetial priest, in declaring war on an overseas enemy, hurled a spear into ‘enemy territory’. Bellona is the cult partner of Mars and associated with the Greek war-goddess, Enyo.
