On this day of the temple of Fortuna Publica was dedicated on the hill of Quirinus. There were three temples of Fortuna in this area which was known as the Three Fortunes. Fors Fortuna was an Italian goddess later identified with the Greek Tyche (Luck). One great centre of her worship was her temple at Praeneste, one of the largest in Italy. Here an oracular shrine which was widely consulted; inscribed tablets of oak were drawn from a chest at random, and the enquirer had to interpret the message for himself. This oracle was very ‘popular’
according to Cicero. Yet he also says that no magistrate or man of reputation would consult it. Inscriptions show that many of the worshippers were working-class tradesmen.
