The temple of ‘Hercules of the Muses’ or ‘Hercules and the Muses’ was erected soon after the triumph of M. Fulvius Nobilior over the Ambracians 179 BCE. This cult recognizes Hercules was the leader of the Muses. In the temple much art work and literature was stored, These included statures of great age brought from Greece of the nine Muses, and Hercules playing a lyre. The cult became known for celebrating the ‘arts of peace’ according to Cicero.
On 30 June literary and art lovers offer their respects to the Muses and Hercules.
