Varro records that ‘the Meditrinalia was named from mederi, “to be healed”. He states the Flamen Martialis, said this phrase on this day due to the custom of pouring an offering of new and old wine and to taste it in order to be healed. Festus gives a similar quotation saying today the must of the new wine was first tasted. Historically, wine which was harvested in August or September was clearly too early to start drinking and the true drinking of new wine and the real tasting and drinking took place at the Vinalia on 23 April. The emphasis for the Meditrinalia was on the formal tasting after a libation and the wine-press.
The presiding deity was Jupiter. Varro’s remarkS that in his day many people’toasted’ the occasion by offering libations and saying “to be healed”.
