April is a month of festivals. The first one coming up is Ludi Megalenses which runs from April 4-9th. This ludi is in honor of Magna Mater. Typically this would be organized by the Aediles. Such official organization cannot happen this year because we do not have any aediles elected. Hopefully, we will by the start of May.
So for MMDCCLXIX, the Ludi Megalenses will need to be organized on an ad hoc basis by a team of volunteers. This will be a private initiative, and I pledge 50 of my own denarii towards the organization of these games.
This is a call for volunteers to join me in organizing these games. Ideally, you would look after one "event". This is usually some sort of friendly contest. What this contest is to be, and the prize awarded is to be determined by the volunteer. If denarii are to be awarded, I’m happy to match 50% of any private contribution made by a citizen towards a prize.
Inspired by the garum post, I will be hosting a Roman cooking competition. A recipe adapted from ancient sources or inspired from ancient Roman origins should be presented, and the outcome of the recipe should be described and displayed with a photo! More details to follow!
Anyone willing to join me towards making the first Ludi Megalenses in the Roman Republic a success? If interested, please send me a PM with your idea and plan! Then we can collaborate and sort out how to best proceed!
I can help! I could organize an art contest. Drawings, paintings, and other non-photographic original works would be enrolled! We could also choose a theme relating to Magna Mater. A simple poll could be used to select the winner!
The only problem is that I have little denarii at the moment. Would anyone be willing to chip in and help fund such a contest? Maybe those who support the game could be judges instead of using a poll to select a winner?
During the Ludi Megalenses ludi scenici, ("scenic games" a.k.a. plays) were performed. If there are any playwrights among the citizens, one contest could be writing a one-act play and submitting the script. If the play could be performed and recorded to be judged and be available for other citizens to watch would be wonderful, but it may not be feasible.
