So, your humble servant owns a few dozens of coins since his short time in local politics and he wonders what can he(or anybody really) actually use them for? One can not use denarii to purchase anything of value or to pay one’s taxes. So, what are they for? For prestige, bonus abilities in political life of the Res Publica and honour plaques one can just donate and obtain all of those, while denarii would stay as some visual rubbish in the corner of the screen without any practical use.
Your confused fellow citizen,
Gaius Flavius Aetius.

I believe it’s akin to Monopoly money; a board game in which people vie to collect the most money as gamers. Thus, this is a game, and you are a player. Shakespeare said something to that effect. Perhaps an English major can provide the exact quote. You may send me a virtual gift with your virtual money for virtually enlightening you, if you wish. Or, you can be a virtual Denarii miser. Your choice, Amico.

I had once suggested several ways to turn it into a real currency (see attached discussion paper). Unfortunately the Senate didn’t consider it. They have their own ideas, what those denarii are supposed to be good for.

I can see several weak places in “real currency” idea, my dear Gaius Florius, so I can understand why the Senate didn’t approve of it. But I believe that there must by at least some way to use denarii, even if only in this community and not in the outside world.

Denarii is not really a currency (yet?) in the RR. It is better to think of it as a public measure of contribution towards volunteering time to build the respublica. A reflection of participation as you will.
Those who participate more are given more voice in how things run here. At least that’s the theory behind the system.
Every citizen should read the guide on denarii here: http://romanrepublic.org/roma/bibliotheca/new-citizens-guide-about-denarii/

So it basically is a monopoly cash as Gaia Veturia said. Okay then, question answered. Gratias tibi ago for this very enlightening message.

I’m working on a proposal with my co-consul, Quintus Furius Camillus, to provide discounted tax rates for those with a certain denarii balance. For instance having 𐆖800 denarii in your account results in a discount of 20% or something like that on tax.
This proposal will not be ready for this year’s census as it will only be proposed this autumn.
